Kantung Semar Nepenthes gracilis dan Hujan

Jurnal KeSimpulan.com - Saat hujan, kadang-kadang lebih baik berteduh daripada berbasah-basah melulu, menginap di tempat yang kering. Tapi jangan di sembarang tempat.

Ini pelajaran hidup yang sulit bagi serangga ketika bersembunyi di bawah penutup pencernaan kendi ramping Kantung Semar (Nepenthes gracilis). Selama hujan deras, serangga sering berteduh di tanaman karnivora asli Sunda Asia Tenggara.

Hujan deras menerjang di atas tutup yang membantu seperti ketapel untuk menjebak serangga masuk ke tabung berisi cairan daun menunggu.

Tetesan hujan membuat getaran di seluruh tutup yang melempar serangga langsung ke bak asam di bawah.

Ternyata tanaman dan hujan berkolaborasi menjadi mitra evolusi. Hipotesis sebelumnya, para ilmuwan berpikir tutup hanya mencegah air hujan agar konsentrasi asam tetap terjaga.

Tapi setelah diselidiki lebih lanjut, peneliti menyadari fungsi struktur ini untuk menjegal mangsa. Bagian bawah tutup harus berevolusi dengan kristal lilin ketika tidak ada yang memukul tutupnya.

Lapisan lilin membuat serangga sedikit bermasalah ketika merangkak balik ke atas yang sering dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan nektar. Tetapi dengan dampak tiba-tiba seperti curah hujan, serangga dengan mudah kehilangan pijakan sehingga jatuh ke perangkap teko yang berakibat fatal.
